Seven Things to Purchase Before Surgery
If you planning on surgery, take a moment and prepare a few items to help your recovery. Don’t wait until you have had the surgery, but plan ahead for a more rapid and successful recovery. Here are a few items you may want to consider in advance; If you doctor has given a list to you on certain supplements to avoid prior to your surgery, be sure to follow their directions.
1. Vitamin C— faster healing, collagen production, antioxidant
2. Serrapeptase 120,000 units 2 x daily– prevention of scar tissue production– a big problem that most don’t know about
3. Pancreatin Complex or O-3-– a second enzyme for the prevention of scar tissue, also reduces pain and inflammation– 1-3 pills 1-3 times daily on an empty stomach
4. Horsetail— if you are having a surgery on bone, joint, tendon or ligaments, consider this herb. It is a rich source of silica and improves bone density and strength
5. Herbal Antibiotic— if your doctor doesn’t give you an antibiotic or it has been found that you won’t need one as follow up to your surgery, you can opt to take a preventative measure and include the Herbal Antibiotic Rx. This herbal blend is all roots and stronger than leafy materials found in most preventative formulas. Take 1.5 grams 2 times daily for 14 days
6. Organic Sulfur— you cannot store sulfur and you cannot make sulfur in your body. Without it, you cannot repair tissues and bone. Multiple functions in your body are dependent upon sulfur for every breath you take. With deficiency, you cannot repair properly and following surgery, this is especially important. This is NOT SULFA. I am asked every day whether a person can take sulfur when they have a sulfa allergy. You are 4 % sulfur, this is not a drug and yes, you can take sulfur. See Post 28
7. *Collagen Rx I,II,III— this is a blend of 3 collagen proteins including hydrolyzed which is more bioavailable. It contains both lysine and vitamin C for better assimilation of collagen, making it bind and strengthening your bones, tissues, and skin. Here are few reasons why collagen is needed–
*Also- make Bone Broth and start this as far in advance as you can and keep it up for life. This recipe is found in POST 7
Why Collagen
By the time you are 40 years of age, you have lost 30% of the collagen in your body. Collagen is the number one protein that makes up your body and as we age, we are simply losing it all along the way. Collagen is what is missing when our skin begins to sag, bones and joints are eroding away, and we begin to feel physically weaker as we age. Smoking, junk food, alcohol, and toxicity all help to work against collagen storage. Even if you do everything you can to live a healthy lifestyle, eat right, and get enough sleep, you are still losing collagen every day of your life once you reach 25 years of age. Up until 25, you are still producing collagen. After that…..well you are depleting it. The great news about Collagen Rx is that you can supplement your body with replenishing it daily. Rather than losing it, you can restore it to bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, tissues, organs and skin. The drawback is if you stop supplementing collagen, your body will revert right back to where you were before taking it, so taking it and keep taking it, is the best and only way to take collagen. Collagen is one of those things you should just take every day every day every day. So what is Collagen? I think of it like glue– it is the glue that holds me together. I always take 4 things every day;
- Collagen Rx
- Organic Sulfur
- Medicinal Mushrooms
- Organic Greens.
Collagen is an insoluble fibrous protein that is found in the supportive structures in our body including bones, teeth, joints, ligaments, tendons, organs, tissues, and skin. It is a major component of the extracellular matrix and connective tissues of the body. There are actually over 15 different types of collagen- all of which contribute to the building blocks of the bound proteins and sugars which result in the frame of the human body. Our bodies are comprised of about 30% Collagen which is our most abundant protein. These insoluble fibers also support connective tissue and all soft tissue in our organs and skin. It is the protein that gives our organs structions, organs like the liver, kidneys, eyes, muscles, blood vessels and arteries, and heart. Collagen is what makes your skin look young and firm. Without it, and we are all losing it faster than we are gaining it after the age of 25, our skin begins to sag. Collagen helps protect your skin from cross-linking. This damage is what makes the appearance of wrinkles and deep lines in our face and skin over our entire body. Collagen is the “glue” we need for the continuous renewal of cells which repair broken bones, strengthen and repair blood vessels, and help us to overcome bruising quickly.
When taking Collagen or consuming Bone Broth, be sure to also take vitamin C. Vitamin C is necessary to create and bind procollagen. Without vitamin C, the strength of the peptide bonds in procollagen is compromised and the ability to form collagen fibrils is unstable making it less effective. Vitamin C is water soluble and it cannot be stored by the body, so you need to get vitamin C with collagen at the same time. This is why I have added it, along with Lysine, to the Collagen Rx. Lysine strengthens the bond of procollagen by increasing calcium to build collagen into tissues. Athletes, burn victims, and vegans, are usually deficient in Lysine. It too is not produced by the body and must be consumed through foods or as a supplement.
Another way to get more collagen in addition to taking the daily supplement Collagen Rx, is to also start making Bone Broth a staple in the house. See my recipe in Post 7 under the Wellness tab for complete instructions. Bone Broth is packed with proline and glycine. These nutrients help keep bone and ligaments flexible and strong. Making homemade Bone Broth with high quality chicken and beef bones will yield about 1,500 mg of fully bioavailable calcium per liter of broth, along with the compounds and cofactors to ensure easy digestion. If you make your Bone Broth WITHOUT the popular vegetables such as carrot, onion, celery, etc., you will prepare an almost tasteless broth. The advantage to this is that you can add it into anything, even a smoothie and you’ll never know it is there. I add Bone Broth gel into pasta sauce, soups, stews, smoothies, sauces, and soups. Anywhere I see liquid going in, so goes the Bone Broth. It looks terrible when you dollop it on top of your foods, but it simply dissolves right in as you heat it. I am putting some photos on this post to show you what to expect.
If you can begin your Collagen Rx along with daily Bone Broth, 12 weeks in advance of your surgery, you will guarantee collagen will be available to help make your recovery more successful. If you haven’t done this, its still not too late. It’s never too late to add this almost magical food to your diet. Add whatever nutrients you may need as an individual. For example, if you are having hip, wrist, knee or other type surgery, be sure to ask me to blend in some glucosamine with your Collagen Rx. For under $5 you can add this important bone-building product.
So if you have to go into surgery, be prepared and get ready with this amazing nutrition. Your recovery will be likely be better and faster than your friends and you won’t have as much down time before you’re back into your daily routines. Enjoy !
