The FDA ruled in 2003 that medical OTC products could no longer sell pectin as an anti-diarrhea remedy. Today, the public still continues to enjoy the benefits of Apple Pectin for many common remedies regardless of drugstore products being discontinued. Kaopectate developed an effective product for diarrhea which combined Apple Pectin with kaolin clay. After 2004, Kaopectate had to withdraw their remedy from the OTC market due to the FDA ruling. Today, Apple Pectin is sold as a thickening agent for cooking.
