Edema is water retention. Whether general puffiness or specific in the lower extremities– such as your lower legs, edema is uncomfortable and in some cases the symptom of something serious. On the lighter side, too much salt. On the serious side, it can be kidney trouble, PAD, liver, congestive heart disease, and more. You can have edema which is cerebral– the brain. These types of edema are not from eating salty foods, but much more.

If more serious, you may want to get a checkup if you haven’t, so you can identify the problem properly. Doing this will help you to select what natural courses you have available. Without knowing what you are dealing with, you are “shooting in the dark” so to speak and may be missing precious time you need to work on your problem while you have control over things. I see many people who wait so long to find out the problem is that irreparable damage has happened. Just as always, prevention is key. Doing nothing is just not an option; whether minor or major, edema is a body out-of-balance.

Here are my favorite herbs for reducing edema. Combine these any way you wish or use them all-in-one. We offer pill makers so you can make your own pills easily and more accurately than just by hand. I suggest the “00” size machine which gives you about a 500 mg. capsule. You can dissolve your herbal mix into hot water, tea, diluted juice for best results if not using capsules. Whether taking capsules or using a powder, herbs taken on an empty stomach is ideal, waiting 30 minutes to eat food.  Second choice is to add a rounded teaspoon of a blend, into a morning smoothie.

Herbs
Nettle
Juniper Berry
Garlic
Turmeric
Ginger Root
Parsley Leaf
Hibiscus
Ginkgo Biloba
Dandelion
Burdock
Peppermint

B Vitamins & Iron
Increase foods high in B-vitamins & iron. Here is a list of these foods;
Dark Leafy Greens– dark lettuces, spinach, all of these types
Seaweed
Kale– cooked only, not raw (this is a cruciferous vegetable)

Potassium
Increase foods high in Potassium and if you need to, prepare the recipe I have provided in Post 96 Potassium Broth, under the Wellness Tab. Taking Potassium in pill form is usually a short term supplement unless prescribed by your doctor for specific treatment. Too much Potassium can be as much of a problem as too little. So food is your best choice for this mineral either way. Here are your Potassium sources of foods and herbs;

Pineapple
Parsley Leaf
Asparagus
Green Beans
Grapes
Beets
Chocolate
Apricots
Banana
Kiwi
Squash- especially pumpkin
Garlic & Onions
Leeks
Apples
Oranges
Citrus
Flounder
Sardines
Salmon
Cod
Pistachios
Almonds
Red Clover, Nettle, Sage, Catnip, Scullcap, Horsetail (shavegrass), Plantain

Antioxidants
Increase Antioxidant-Rich Foods and refer to my recent Post No. 145.  Just increasing these foods will help to build your health overall, and will reduce edema. Increase foods in this simple list;

Blueberries
Blackberries
Bilberries
Raspberries
Tomatoes
Red Bell Pepper
Squash
Yams
Cherries
Water
Drink 2 liters daily of liquid;  this choice includes a total oz. from tea, herb tea, filtered water, and fresh made juice.  Many people think that when they have edema, they should reduce water intake because they have so much water in their system. The opposite is true, unless you have compromised kidneys and are under restriction medically. If you have medical advise that restricts your fluid intake, you’ll need to work with your health care professional to monitor your fluid recommendations.
