SIBO—small intestine bacterial overgrowth
Posts referenced in this material include Post 28 Organic Sulfur DMSO2 & Post 62 How to Take Psyllium Husk
Very commonly found in a multitude of auto-immune illnesses, all gut diseases, and possible undiagnosed parasite infections in the system or intestinal tract. SIBO is an issue anytime a person has H Pylori, sulfur-smelling belching, excessive burping, infections like Giardia or other parasites, anyone who has traveled out of the country and then developed intestinal problems without resolve (usually both parasite and SIBO).
The most common pharmaceutical-medical treatment involves a triple antibiotic regime for 30 days consisting of these antibiotics; clindamycin, metroniadazole, neomycin
Deficiencies
In order to correct SIBO specific diet restrictions for a period of time are required in order to restore intestinal balance. People with SIBO commonly have these deficiencies caused by the gut imbalance and digestive malfunctions;
- Low stomach acid (HCL)
- B12
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin E
- Iron
- Vitamin K
- Low Fatty Acids due to poor assimilation
Primary Dietary Restrictions — follow strictly for 14 days avoiding the FODMAPS. These foods are those which do not fully digest and ferment in the GI tract. This feeds bad bacteria and increases the problem. Eat small meals, 3-5 per day instead of 3 larger meals. This keeps food moving more quickly through the digestive tract and reduces fermentation in the small intestines. Many studies are finding that the number cause of SIBO is the lack of HCL or low stomach acid
- Dairy
- Alcohol
- Leafy green vegetables (will be added in after the initial 2 weeks)
- Legumes
- Nuts (these may never be tolerated well)
- Potatoes
- Starchy vegetables
- Rice
- Oats and rye
- Grains in general
For 2 weeks avoid these foods entirely;
- Fructose– most fruits, all fruit juice, processed sugar, baked goods, processed cereals, processed honey, maple syrup, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup
- Fructans– garlic, onion, cabbage, artichoke, asparagus, broccoli, leeks, wheat
- Lactose– dairy, any processed dairy foods, any foods with lactose
- Galactans– brussels’s sprouts, cabbage, soy, legumes
- Polyols– sorbitol, lactitol, isomalt, xylitol, erythritol, all of these can be found in gum, mints, and certain medications
Begin Here– These Are The Foods To Eat For 2 Weeks
Immediately when starting this program, find the level of HCL tablets with meals that is ideal for you. Begin with 1 tablet and increase to as many as 3-4 depending upon how it sets with you. You should not get indigestion or gas from HCL, if you do, stop taking them and use a digestive enzyme complex which has NO HCL. For clarity in the beginning, use two enzymes at each meal—pancreatic formula + HCL. Once the amount you need is established, a combination single enzyme should be used.
- Blueberries
- Tomatoes
- Grapes
- Honeydew melon
- Cantaloupe
- Wild caught salmon & tuna
- *Grass fed beef & lamb
- Indian spices
- Almond milk (some people not tolerated)
- *Free range poultry and eggs
- Bananas
- Raw hard cheeses
- Pineapple
- Almond & coconut milk
- Leafy greens- limit
- Squash
- Carrots
- Strawberries
- Quinoa
- Sprouted Nut Butters- some cannot use these
- Cucumbers
- Coconut Milk
- Seaweed (or take kelp pills)
- **Psyllium Husk
*Why Grass Fed & Free Range Organic? Animals which are not grass fed, free range, organic, are animals which are fed GMO grains and corn (all GMO). When animals are fed this diet, it transfers directly to you through the fats which marble the meat. Not only is GMO seriously concerning, but by gorging animals with grains instead of grass, the meat is enriched with high omega 6 fatty acids. This is the fatty acid which is highly inflammatory. Do not take supplements labeled 3.6.9 Fatty Acids. The American diet is already too high in omega 6 fatty acid, it is the omega 3 you are deficient in. Omega 9 is found in olive oil and coconut oil. Both Omega 9 are excellent. Coconut oil has NO cholesterol.
**Psyllium Husk SEE POST 62 FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MIX & TAKE THIS FIBER-– begin with 1 teaspoon and work up to as much as 1 tablespoons 2 x daily AM and PM. This is SHAKEN into juice, tea or water and consumed by itself without supplements or any medications. Psyllium Husk will clean both the large and the small intestines but it will also absorb nutrients, medications, and supplements, so it must be taken as a stand-alone. After taking this, wait for 1 hour before eating and 2 hours before a medication. Bowel herbs can be added to Psyllium Husk. Add liquid to a shaker jar, then add Psyllium Husk, cover and SHAKE VIGOROUSLY FOR 10-15 seconds. Drink immediately or becomes solid. Add more liquid to thin it if too thick. Usually 6 oz. of liquid is good for a heaping teaspoon of husk. 8 oz. is better for a tablespoon. Always drink a full 8 oz. glass of water immediately after taking Psyllium Husk Fiber. SEE POST 62
AFTER a strict 2-week period, then switch to the GAPS Diet. Now add these into the program
- Bone Broth- daily
- Fruit- in between meals but not with
- Coconut oil, olive oil, & ghee or organic butter
- Yogurt—24 hour cultured (you’ll have to make this- see Post 2 under Wellness)
- Probiotic Foods WITH meals- kombucha, natto, cultured veggies
- 1 tablespoon of fermented vegetable juice with each meal (sauerkraut juice). You can also try using 1-2 tablespoons of sauerkraut with each meal like a side dish
- Raw Unfiltered Organic– Honey, or Manuka Honey
- Leafy green vegetables- moderate
- Homemade raw pickles- make your own (about 14 days to delicious results)
- Sauerkraut- make your own if you are up to it (takes 1 month of fermenting)
- Take Collagen Rx I,II,III daily– 10 grams if over 40, 5 grams if between 20-40 years
- Raw hard cheeses
- Sprouted nut butters (some may not be able to tolerate even these)
- Add some beneficial healthy foods that were avoided during the initial 2 weeks back in as tolerated such as; garlic, onion, asparagus, artichoke, brussels’s sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, leeks, edamame, soy sauce. These can be tested out 1 at a time every 5 days. Eliminate any food that causes intestinal disturbance. These vegetables mentioned should be cooked.
After about 1 month of a primary GAPS Diet, if you are not making good progress or feel you have benefited in overall results, you may want to consider making your diet primarily made up of soups and stews using hearty clean approved foods. If you have known food allergies, be sure to avoid these even if they are on the acceptable food list, these would not be acceptable for you as an individual. Healing the gut takes time and this varies from person to person. Some heal up more quickly in 3-6 months, others over a year.
SIBO Supplements
- B12 sublingual- 5000 mcg
- Vitamin D3- 5000 mg
- Vitamin K (K2 is the form important to pushing calcium from the blood into the bones)
- Probiotics- with each meal and at bedtime
- Iron- use either the OTC Slow Iron, or Fulvic Humic Liquid (1 Tbl 1-2 x ), or 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of unsulfured blackstrap molasses
- Zinc- 30 mg. daily for 1 month then revert to zinc rich foods
- Digestive Enzymes—a full pancreatic complex and or with HCL- with all meals
- Peppermint Oil—take 1 drop in water or coconut milk for indigestion and gas relief
- Essential Oil Formula Containing– oregano, tarragon, frankincense, clove, also may benefit from including fennel, coriander, and nutmeg—take 1-3 drops after each meal. If using over 1 drop, place drops in an empty capsule. These can be made ahead and placed in the freezer to preserve. Leaving filled capsules at room temperature will cause them to degrade and fall apart, freezing will keep this from happening and make it convenient.
- Herbal Antibiotic—optional– take for 14 days on and 7 days off, repeat if necessary for any bacterial infection, H Pylori, flares, etc.
- Herbal Cleanse– optional 30 days use– combine goldenseal, herbs high in berberines (herbal antibiotic), oregano leaf, pau d arco, olive leaf. Take a caprylic acid supplement using 1 capsule 2 x daily for 8 weeks
- Parasite Cleanse—optional– either follow the Anti Parasite Cleanse which can be found under the Wellness tab Post 70, or read more information under Post 69, or combine these herbs- sweet wormwood (Artemisia anna), tribulus, magnesium, berberine herbs (herbal antibiotic), grapefruit extract or peel, bearberry, black walnut
- Ginger Tea—helps to clear the lymph system while settling the stomach and reducing gas
- Black Pepper—even though pepper is an excellent catalyst which promotes the effectiveness of other herbs, such as turmeric in Golden Milk, it is still a common allergen. If you are allergic to black pepper, of course avoid it. If you notice that you have stomach distress after using pepper in foods, you may want to eliminate it for a period of time to see if notice improvement.
- Prepare and consume a wide variety of detox soups, teas, and foods. Variety is important as well as cleanses the entire body.
- Psyllium Husk– see Post 62 for directions
- Organic Sulfur- DMSO2- for some this works amazing while for others it may upset their stomach depending upon their problem. Start small to test out whether DMSO2 is right for you. In some cases, people do claim it has completely corrected their problem with SIBO. See Post 28 to read about Organic Sulfur and its benefits.
