Brain Fog
- Ginkgo 60 mg – 1 capsule 2-3 times a day.
- Mental Sharpness – Take 2 capsules daily. For mild memory problems associated with aging, taking a variety of supplements is more powerful than taking ginkgo alone. It safely supports enhanced focus and brain function through its unique blend of powerful antioxidants, energizing B vitamins, high-potency alpha lipoic acid and clinically-studied herbal extracts.
- Niacin – (not niacinamide or “flush free niacin). Take 100-500 mg of niacin 3-4 times a day on an empty stomach as needed to cause a “flushing” feeling, which occurs within ~ 10-20 minutes. The Flushing feeling is often intense, but not dangerous. It opens the blood vessels to your brain and other areas that have been deprived of blood flow. You may choose to let the pill dissolve in your mouth, and follow it with a glass of cold water. The flush can significantly help brain fog and pain and niacin is very inexpensive. Try to keep the dose at 1000 mg a day or less if this is enough to cause flushing, as higher doses can rarely cause liver inflammation or unmask diabetes. This treatment also helps to lower cholesterol.
- Piracetam – 1200 mg twice a day for 2 weeks, then take 2400 mg twice a day for 2 weeks. Then adjust to optimum dose (up to 4800 mg a day). Can be ordered from England. Take with Hydergine
- DMAE – up to 400 mg a day
- Lion’s Mane– 5 grams twice daily without food- repairs nerves and works directly on brain function
- Ashwagandha Root – 500 mg. 3 x daily. Works directly on the brain. complementary with Lion’s Mane
Fibromyalgia and Substance P—
Substance P, or SP, is produced in excess in people who suffer from fibromyalgia. Substance P is a neuropeptide that is recognized as a neurotransmitter which carries the message of pain from the brain, through the spinal cord and nerves. Fibromyalgia occurs when there is up to three times more than the normal level of substance P in the cerebrospinal fluid. SP binds to a receptor molecule and transmits the pain signals through the central nervous system.
Substance P was discovered around 1931. This discovery resulted in the development of many of the pain drugs we use today. These drugs are designed to help shut down the SP pathway. The human body however is very smart. As the pathways are shut down, the body begins to over-compensate for this by producing more SP. The tradeoff for a relief of pain, is that as the drug wears off and the pathway reopens, more SP has been produced, which rushes to your brain to let you know you have pain. This is why over time, synthetic pain killers ultimately establish more pain signals from the brain throughout the body and we build tolerance and experience more pain, not less.
Pain
Substance P has been found to be reduced using an external capsaicin cream which acts directly upon C fiber nerves which makes them more tolerant to pain. Capsaicin in ointments and creams, is used as n analgesic and anti-inflammatory. Substance P is a source of pain transmission in Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, and Neuralgia from Herpes Zoster- known as Shingles.
So, what drugs and herbs reduce Substance P?
First the drugs–
DRUGS
- General pain killers, synthetic narcotic medications
- Non-peptidic antagonists of the neurokinin 1 receptor, or substance P antagonists, which are a class of drugs with antidepressant efficacy
- Anticonvulsant drugs – pregabalin (Lyrica) and gabapentin (Neurontin). These drugs reduce levels of glutamate (a key excitatory neurotransmitter) and norepinephrine. An elevated SP level also reduces deep sleep. These drugs increase deep sleep. Some research suggests that an increase of SP may be linked to a deficiency of deep sleep, which is why these drugs have worked for some patients.
ALTERNATIVE HEALTH- HERBS & SUPPLEMENTS
- Capsaicin ointment, oil massage, and cream
- Magnesium– use citrate in cases of constipation and a glycinate if you are experiencing diarrhea. Magnesium Glycinate 75 mg– 2 tablets 3x a day for 8 months, then 2 tablets a day (less if diarrhea is a problem). Start with 1 to 2 a day and slowly work up as able without getting uncomfortable diarrhea. You can take up to 10 a day for constipation. Taking it with food may lessen diarrhea. If pain or fatigue recurs on lowering the dose, increase it. Taken at bedtime, it helps sleep.
- Magnesium Oil– 8 sprays on area of pain, especially at bedtime. This is a common remedy used on the legs and in cases that are accompanied by RLS.
- Anti-Inflammatory Formula– turmeric, ginger root, fenugreek, and cinnamon

- Melatonin – ½ mg – 1 mg at bedtime (available at health food stores). If you feel wide awake at bedtime, try 5 mg taken 3 to 5 hours before bedtime. Don’t use a higher dose unless you find it more effective (.5 mg is usually as effective as 5 mg and may be safer
- GABA 250mg. no food, with water, during the day or at bedtime
- Wild Dagga Smoke 1-2 grams before bed. Recommended only for those who already use smokables. Wild Dagga is non-addictive. Best in a pipe as compared to being rolled in papers. Also take passion flower to help keep you asleep if you are a person who goes to sleep but wakes up after a few hours. Passion flower can help keep you asleep.
If hormonal issues are involved test your waking temperature for thyroid involvement. Take iodine for 2-4 months if you have daytime body temperatures under 98.3 degrees or breast or ovarian cysts. Take 12.5 mg iodine (iodine 5 mg & iodide7.5 mg). May flare Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and rarely may suppress thyroid function with long term use

Be sure to drink plenty of water or the bath will dehydrate you. Add lemon or lime to the drinking water and drink while soaking. The citrus fruits are coolants as well as detoxifiers for the liver and pH alkalizer for the blood. If you become lightheaded, be careful exiting the tub or have someone nearby the first time you use a detoxifying bath such as this. Essential oils such as lavender can be included with the bath. Lavender is relaxing and distressing. Others may also be helpful such as frankincense. Rinse off with warm water after the bath or your skin will be itchy. Try to lay down and rest for 30 minutes after the bath.

Substance P – A cause of pain
The best physical exercises for Substance P overload are stretching and hobbies. Activities like any hobby where you use your fingers over and over in a repetitive way. Stretching discharges Substance P from nerve endings. Hobbies send pleasant sensory input through your brain stem, as well as accessing your hypothalamus gland (through your cerebellum or motion control center) which delivers the message in machine language that everything is fine so calm down- hobbies can reduce SP, relax tight muscles, and help to diminish pain.
Certain supplements discharge Substance P out of your nerves DURING THE DAY, so that less will be deposited in your nerves at bedtime. The following nutrients can be helpful and may be used in any combination.
- Quercetin– is helpful in reducing SP, allergies, skin sensitivity or itching, sinus problems, pollen allergies, digestive disorders. Best taken at bedtime.
- Calcium- citrate is easily absorbed with or without food. Small doses are best assimilated, taken periodically in the day. Helps the body handle stress more effectively
- Carnosine– concentrated in the brain to protect brain cells. It directly buffers brain cells from wear and tear. Carnosine helps to reduce surplus histamine release in mast cells that may irritate your nerves and promote allergy symptoms. It also has rejuvenating effects on brain cells
- Cellfood- a liquid drop supplement proven to reduce the symptoms of Fibromyalgia, containing electrolytes, enzymes, and oxygen. It is an excellent detoxifier.
- ALC– Acetyl-l-carnitine promotes cellular energy and supports the natural production of both serotonin and dopamine. ALC naturally discharges substance P from the nerves
Essential Oils– single and blends- used internally and externally- frankincense, sacred frankincense, peppermint, valerian. Combination of herbs including oils, tends to work better than singles in many instances. Peppermint for one is a vasodilator which some might think would not be good for fibromyalgia, however it is also a catalyst and helps reduce the transition of pain from the brain. It also can help to heal the nervous system, so in this case for example, peppermint is still a good option when combined with other key oils.
- Frankincense (helps to reduce pain transmission from the brain)
- Sacred frankincense (helps to reduce pain transmission from the brain)
- Peppermint or spearmint (a catalyst which can help to heal the nervous system and works with frankincense to reduce the transition of pain from the brain)
- Valerian (muscle and nerve relaxant)
- Black Cohosh (hormonal which can help reduce headaches)
- Cayenne (a catalyst which helps to reduce pain, used externally is warming to muscle and nerve to reduce pain impulses)
- Clove (warming)
- Comfrey (tissue and cell proliferation)
- Feverfew (headaches)
- Ginger (warming, circulation, brain)
- Helichrysum (St John’s Wort Flower) (hormonal, emotion, reduction of melancholy mood)
- Spike lavender (hormonal, calming, reduces melancholy)
- Thyme (most potent immune stimulant)
- Turmeric (anti-inflammatory)
Herbs-
- Peppermint (potentiator, catalyst to help reduce brain impulses from the brain)
- Spearmint (same as peppermint, milder)
- Valerian root (muscle and nerve relaxant, “herbal valium”)
- Scullcap (anxiety, anti-depressant)
- Kava kava (anxiety, “herbal xanax”)
- Kratom (anxiety, pain, mood)
- Mugwort (calming)
- Motherwort (calming, stabilizes overactive thyroid, pain reducing, anti-tumor- especially concerning the thyroid)
- Poppy flower and California Poppy Leaf (calming, anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, relaxant, insomnia)
- Hops flower (insomnia, relaxant, anti-anxiety, pain reducing)
- Passion flower (insomnia, helps reduce middle of night insomnia & staying asleep, pain, anxiety)
- Cayenne (potentiator, catalyst for reducing pain, warming, improves circulation)
- Ginger root (potentiator, warming, anti-inflammatory, helps to reduce pain, improves circulation)
- Black pepper (potentiat0r warming, improves the strength of other herbs to function at a higher rate)
- Turmeric (anti-inflammatory, reduces lesions in the brain, reduces pain impulses from the brain)
- Fenugreek Seed (anti-inflammatory)
- Cinnamon (Ceylon) (anti-inflammatory, calms the stomach, doesn’t burden the liver compared to “fake” cassia cinnamon)
Supplements generally take 7-14 days to experience a full effect. Do not use capsaicin if you are allergic to peppers. Do not take capsaicin internally if you experience an allergic reaction to a cream or ointment. Although capsaicin causes a heated sensation to the skin, it DOES NOT CAUSE blistering or serious burning. If you experience this type of reaction, do not take this pepper internally, stop use of any external application and seek medical attention if needed. As usual, so not use any products if you are pregnant or a nursing mother without supervision of your doctor.
Flushing Pain Out of the Area of Congestion–
- Niacin – (not niacinamide or “flush free niacin”). Take 100-500 mg of niacin 3-4 times a day on an empty stomach as needed to cause a “flushing” feeling, which occurs within ~ 10-20 minutes. Taking 100mg is generally not enough to accomplish the desired “flushing”. The flushing can significantly help pain by delivering nutrients into the tissues and washing toxins out of painful areas. Work up a higher dose starting with 100mg. If you can, try to maintain a dose as high as 500-1000mg per day. 500mg often works as a good daily dose. Using niacin at higher doses in some rare cases have caused liver inflammation. If diabetes is present but unknown to the individual, it can unmask it. If brain fog is a problem, niacin also is very helpful with this by bringing blood to the brain and improving overall circulation to organs.
- Enzyme Therapy– this is very effective pain and inflammation reducer; There are 3 enzymes to work with—
- Bromelain take 500mg 3 x/day with water, on an empty stomach, no food, between meals, also found in pineapple
- O-3 Formula If using O-3, take 1-3 tablets with water, on an empty stomach, no food, between meals 3x/day.
- Serrapeptase This enzyme is derived from the silkworm. For reduction in scar tissue, scarring on the nerves, and reducing pain & inflammation, take 120,000 units on an empty stomach 1-3 x per day with water.
To increase the effectiveness of Enzyme Therapy
- Drink plenty of distilled water to flush out toxins- about ½ gallon (use distilled water the first year and then filtered clean water after this)
- Detox Bath 3 x per week
- Niacin (flushing type) using 100-500mg each day
Other Supplements For Pain Reduction
- Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin– 1500mg per day Glucosamine and 1000-1200mg Chondroitin, use in 2-3 divided doses. Generally these come in a lesser dosage size due to the size of the tablets. Most formulations require taking the supplement 3 times each day with food.
- Alpha Lipoic Acid- (ALA) 200mg 3 x/day for neuropathic pain. Relief from this supplement may take as long as 3 months to yield results. It is also beneficial for those who also have diabetes. If you have diabetes and experience burning mouth as well, it may take 5-6 months to yield full results from supplementing lipoic acid.
- MSM or Organic Sulfur– MSM 3-6 grams per day in 3 divided doses with food, or Organic Sulfur using 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon dissolved in 2 oz. of hot water on an empty stomach 1-2 times per day. When starting Organic Sulfur, start with 1 teaspoon and work up to higher doses. THESE ARE DEHYRATORS. DO NOT USE THEM UNLESS YOU DRINK ½ GALLON OF WATER PER DAY EVERY DAY. Organic Sulfur is also called DMSO2- a dry form of DMSO which is also sulfur. Organic Sulfur is the purest form of supplemental sulfur. MSM has as many as 16 other ingredients in the product. These ingredients may be hidden within labeling law and not necessarily listed on the bottle. These ingredients include anti-caking, anti-drying, anti-clumping agents and components like this. Organic Sulfur contains nothing but Organic Sulfur.
- DMSO liquid- use a 50/50 or 70/30 strength spray. Apply to pain area 1-2 times per day. Skin will dry easily, so use sparingly or apply coconut oil to moisturize. See directions for applying DMSO correctly. Many people do not know that DMSO is often times taken internally for inflammation using 1 teaspoon per day in water.
- Tiger’s Balm– apply to areas of pain 2-3 times per day as needed, or use a product with camphor and menthol.
- Fish Oil– greatly reduces inflammation, dry eyes, dry mouth- take 1000mg 1-3 x per day with food, with a daily 5000mg of Vitamin D3 included.
- Cetyl Myristoleate (see-tul-meye-ris-toe-lee-ate) Take 385mg using 3 capsules 2 times per day for 10 consecutive days. Maximum daily dosage is 17 grams. After completing the 10 day series, results may extend in effective pain and inflammation reduction for a period of time.
