Whole Star Anise- Certified Organic– This star-shaped spice has a distinct licorice flavor which is used in cooking, baking, and in teas. It has impressive medicinal qualities against SARS & swine flu. Star Anise clear congestion and respiratory discomfort used both as a tea and as a steam.
Star anise is the primary source of shikimic acid, a plant-based compound that is the precursor to oseltamivir. Oseltamivir is marketed as an antiviral drug under the label Tamiflu. Shikimic acid in itself is not as effective against the flu unless it is combined with quercetin. Even the smallest amounts of quercetin taken in addition to shikimic acid, or in this case, a strong tea of Star Anise, greatly increases its effects as an anti-viral. During the SARS outbreak, Star Anise was used along with Oil of Oregano as well. The 3 together would be an excellent natural remedy. When shikimic acid is taken along with quercetin, it acts by effectively ramping up the immune system, which in turns helps fight off viral infection. During the threat of a pandemic, these three items would be a good stash to keep on hand.
Oil of Star Anise has also been found to be a powerful antifungal against candida albican infection. The antimicrobial compounds in Star Anise have a significant resistance against antibiotic resistant bacteria. Researchers in Taiwan tested and found Star Anise to be effective against 67 strains of drug-resistant bacteria and counting.
Researchers also found that the antioxidant compounds in Star Anise, when given to mice exposed to carcinogens, developed less cancers than those who did not receive them.
Know Your Product– ONLY Chinese Star Anise (Illicium verum) is safe for consumption, not to be confused with Japanese Star Anise (Illicium anisatum) which is toxic. Star Anise is not recommended to be consumed by children or infants.
