Lion’s Mane Medicinal Mushroom

Lion’s Mane Medicinal Mushroom has a broad spectrum of potential compounds which has drawn the focus of scientific research teams, for its impressive nerve-regenerative properties and affects on the brain and potential in the prevention of, Alzheimer’s Disease. See Post 129 for more information.

Research on Lion’s Mane is ever increasing for its neuroprotective effects and discovery of two classes of NGFs (nerve growth factors).  The study has shown this fungus to be stimulating with the differentiation and re-myelination of neurons. These are called cyathane derivatives and termed;  hericenones and erinacines.  The levels of these important compounds vary between harvests and most importantly, must be used medicinally as an organic sourced grow-op.

Since 1991, at least a dozen studies have been published on Lion’s Mane Mushroom in Japan. The doctor who made the discovery on its neuroregenerative properties is Dr. Kawagishi.  Since his early discovery, Lion’s Mane has further been confirmed that both hericenones and erinacines do indeed stimulate nerve regeneration. More recently, the Hokuto Corporation and Isogo Central and Neurosurgical Hospital conducted and published their findings on 30 Japanese patients which cognitive impairment, resulted in significant benefits for as long as they consumed Lion’s Mane Mushroom. Benefits were both initial and ongoing, with expected continuing use of this fungus. The initial study was conducted over a 12 to 16 week duration. In comparison to the placebo group, cognitive function was confirmed in the patients who received the Lion’s Mane. However, within 4 weeks of discontinuance of the mushroom, the function benefits faded.  Conclusion is the benefits to be enjoyed must include ongoing use of Lion’s Mane.

Neuroprotection And Nerve Growth Factor

Lion’s Mane has an impressive ability to prevent and treat nerve damage. There are over a dozen studies that support the claim that Lion’s Mane supports neurogenesis, which is the creation of new neurons. This results in permanent improvements to brain health.

A study conducted by the Tohoku University in 2008 which explored the effects of mushrooms on nerve growth. What was found is that ONLY Lion’s Mane, of all the medicinal mushrooms on the market today, has positive impact on nerve repair. Through the process of digestion, particles of Lion’s Mane are distributed through the body which enables them to pass over the blood-brain barrier. Once over the blood brain barrier, these particles are then capable of directly stimulating the production of enzymes which release NGF (nerve growth factors) and actually repair the nerve myelin. Nerve regeneration affects a number of disorders which include the following;

Muscular Dystrophy- all varieties
Alzheimer’s Disease
Parkinson’s Disease
Senility & Dementia
Short Memory Disorders: ADD, ADHD
Various Neurological Disorders & Difficulties

Alzheimer’s Disease and Lion’s Mane

In studies, the reduction of beta amyloid plagues in the brains of mice who were fed Lion’s Mane, were remarkable. In as little as 23 days, cognitive function improved as well as a return in general curiosity in the test subjects. Among baby boomers, this disease has surged in the last 10 years by over 66%.

Lion’s Mane– The Smart Mushroom

This Medicinal Mushroom can be potentially beneficial to a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases.  If it improves memory, recall, and attention span, it may also have potential for those with Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and the preservation of telomeres, which are responsible for the prevention of senility in old age.

Depression, Anxiety, Brain-Fog, Drug & Alcohol Recovery, and a Multitude of Psychiatric Disorders

Lion’s Mane Mushroom has also been found to improve a wide spectrum of issues, some very promising for those who are searching for alternatives for psychiatric disorders other than pharmaceutical medications. These benefits include;

  • mood
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • brain fog, especially menopausal women
  • schizophrenia
  • bipolar
  • dementia
  • autism
  • epilepsy
  • alcohol & drug recovery
  • meth and cocaine recovery

A.D.D. and A.D.H.D

Lion’s Mane Mushroom improves both cognitive function and attention span in those who struggle with learning disabilities. Many people with either A.D.D. or A.D.H.D also have problems with anxiety. Lion’s Mane, because it also reduces anxiety and improves mood, can be especially beneficial for students.

Standard Supplemental Dosage

The good news is that the study groups who took Lion’s Mane, only ingested 3 daily doses of 250 mg..  This total is under 1 gram, yet it yielded results of improved cognitive function.  It would be concluded with this evidence that 1 gram daily can be beneficial and standard for adding Lion’s Mane into your regime.

Therapeutic Dosage

The therapeutic level of supplementation is higher than 1 gram, averaging between 3-5 grams, 1 to 2 times daily, in water on an empty stomach.  An empty stomach for this supplement is 30-45 minutes before a meal or 2 hours after a meal.

How to Take Lion’s Mane Mushroom Powder

Add powder to a simple water bottle and shake to dissolve and drink it between meals during the day.  You may also add it into any vegetable broth, miso soup, hot water, tea, or fresh juice (such as carrot, beet, celery, ginger- for example). The best method is with water or tea, especially green tea.  Combining Lion’s Mane Mushroom with Ashwagandha Root is highly recommended.  Research on both have been highly beneficial to brain function. Lion’s Mane may also be beneficial for bowel diseases since it is beneficial for the digestive tract as well as the brain, which may be supportive to a healthy brain-gut connection.
