Vitamin C Facial Serum

Who wants to pay $50 or a hundred dollars on a facial serum you can make at home for almost nothing?  Me of course, and you I assume, since you are reading this Post. It is so easy that you are going to just laugh at your past purchases.

Vitamin C promotes the production of collagen in your skin.  Collagen keeps your skin more firm and youthful as you age.  Taking Vitamin C internally is good, but applying it externally, directly effects the skin as it penetrates into the skin.  Add a few drops of essential oil and you have a better product than anything you could buy on the commercial market.

Vitamin C serum is an acid, so different strengths may be needed until you adjust to application.  I use a 20% strength.  Most women and men, find that starting with a 5% solution, and increasing potency each week until reaching 20% is needed to not cause redness or irritation.  I did not have any problem starting at 20%, but I have strong skin and am not generally sensitive to facial products.

Application

Apply to skin under moisturizer, each morning and before bed.

Shelf Life

This product is made each week.  Once prepared, your product will last for ONE WEEK.  So make small batches and feel free to use anywhere on your skin that would benefit, such as arms, above the knee, abdomen, etc.  I like to make 1 ounce per week.  If I am getting towards the end of a week, I simply use it more liberally and add it into my lotion or body butter.

Solution Strength

If your skin becomes red or irritated, reduce the strength by adding in a little more water.

Additives to the Serum

Any of these ingredients can be added to customize your recipe. A few drops from an ampoule is all that is needed to increase your product effectiveness–

  • Collagen (wrinkles, sagging)
  • Elastin (improves elasticity)
  • Bee Propolis (repair, skin preservation)
  • Green Tea Powder- 1 pinch to a batch
  • 1 drop of Cellfood to the size of a quarter application (oxygen to tissues- must add daily because once mixed it has an 18 hour shelf life)
  • Papain Enzyme- 1 pinch to a batch (improves exfoliation)
  • Kelp- 1 pinch to a batch  (minerals)
  • DMAE- 2-3 capsules per 1 oz. batch (face lift in a bottle)
  • Vitamin E-  1 drop of liquid or a partial capsule (elasticity)  This is more sticky, so less is more
  • DMSO- 1 drop to 1 ounce of product produced.  DMSO is a dehydrator which also increases penetration into the skin. Do not use more than a drop. You want the benefits of penetration improvement without the downside of dehydration.
  • Essential Oil- choose whatever oil you wish and use about 5 drops to a one ounce batch. Many oils are great for the skin.  I personally like frankincense, germanium, carrot, chamomile, jasmine, lavender, lemon.  Do a little research for the best oils for your needs.

I will explain next how to do this–  follow these instructions and you’ll make a professional product in your kitchen.  I used to work in the film and beauty business.  Making natural products, way back before they were popular, was my specialty. I will be adding some ampoules into my inventory again, at the store, in the near future.  These ampoules can be added to this recipe to further enhance your product.

Serum Recipe

What you will need-  optionals are not mentioned but add them if you wish

  • Vitamin C Powder
  • Boston Round Glass Bottle (2 oz. – leaves extra room for mixing)
  • Distilled Water
  • Essential Oil of your choice- 5 drops
  • DMAE capsules- 2-3
  • Vegetable Glycerin

Recipe–  20% Strength

  • 1 teaspoon Vitamin C Powder
  • 5 teaspoons Distilled Water (you can use more water for greater amount of fluid for body use)
  • DMAE 2 capsules
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon Vegetable Glycerin
  • Essential Oil Drops- 5 drops
  • 1 (2 oz) Glass Boston Round Bottle
  • optionals  (if you add kelp for example, increase your water to 6 teaspoons

Making the Serum-  Good for 1 Week

Add to the Boston Round Bottle–  Vitamin C powder, distilled water, pull apart 2-3 capsules of DMAE, an any optional you wish to add. I really think adding 1 kelp pill is very effective for infusing your skin with minerals.

Place the cap on the bottle and shake for 4 minutes.  You do not need to shake vigorously, just shake and shake for 4 full minutes.  If you shake it for less time than this, your product will be gritty.

After 4 minutes, add the following;  5 drops of essential oil, and 1/2 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin.  Shake to mix.  That’s it.

Most recipes for products like this use 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin, even when the smallest amount of product being made. Although this acts as an emulsifier and moisturizer, it can be sticky if you use too much.  I find 1 teaspoon to be too much for my liking, but adjust the recipe as you find best suits your needs. I use 1/2 teaspoon per batch using the 20% strength recipe above.

Make a fresh batch weekly and try some optional ingredients if you wish to.  As a basic recipe, I like to keep it simple and prefer this blend.

I make a larger batch myself and I use it on my whole body before I apply lotion. It seems to make the skin over your entire body, nicer.  If 20% is too much, simply dilute and work up to 20% more gradually.
