Post 97 Broth and Protein for IBD’s

Post 97

Potassium Recovery Broth

Make one of the two recipes under Post 96.  This Potassium Broth is excellent for convalescing, bed rest, and all bowel flares requiring a clear broth regime.  Whether at home or in the hospital, or unless your doctor has put you on a restricted diet regarding water intake or potassium, either of these recipes will help facilitate recovery. To heal the gut and lining of the intestinal tract and colon, you need protein. When ill, or with continuous diarrhea, or if you are in a bowel flare, absorption of protein and other nutrients is diminished. By adding a predigested or highly bioavailable protein to the broth, you can improve healing time and repair tissue more rapidly. Any protein will not work, but rather, the first choice is that it be a liquid.  Second choice is a predigested powdered protein dissolved into the broth, and third an organic protein powder without added ingredients. The key is to get the protein into the process of digestion so it can repair the tissue and provide nutrition for rejuvenation.

Basics–

Prepare the Broth Recipe, making enough for at least 3 days at a time.  When you are using a Potassium Broth therapeutically, it is important to get enough into your system.  Pureeing the vegetables for side dish from this broth preparation is also recommended but not required.  Losing weight while convalescing is undesired. Keeping or regaining your strength must involve nutrition.  The liquid meal replacement containing soy oil, colors, and sugar or worse yet, aspartame, are not an option. You put weight on but you do not build any nutrition into your body.

Preparation

  • Make at least 3 quarts of broth
  • Puree the vegetables
  • Purchase your protein, preferably a *liquid protein (see end of this Post)  After improvement, you can switch over to a powdered protein which we customize and blend at Organica.  Our blend contains type I and III collagen, gelatin, and whey, with a full blend of raw foods.  The Organica blend is excellent and better than any commercial prepared product available in the market. Initially however, the liquid protein recommended is the best choice.  Once improvement is seen, change to the powder.

Schedule–

  1. Drink at least 1 quart of broth daily, divided into 3 doses.
  2. Add 15 grams of Liquid Protein to warmed broth once or twice daily, even three times, divided evenly throughout the day.
  3. As you feel up to it each a portion of pureed vegetables
  4. Drink an herbal tea or green (or white) tea during the day.  White tea has the least caffeine and the highest antioxidant content.
  5. If you have additional supplements you are taking, pull capsules apart and dissolve into any soft food or warm, but not too hot, liquid and consume. Pills may be remaining unused passing through with digestive disorders. By pulling them apart and dispersing the contents of the capsule, you are assuring more assimilation.
  6. Do not exercise beyond walking to build strength. Conserve strength to repair. Working out takes energy more to your muscles and cardiovascular. Right now, you need to focus on your digestive system and getting back on your feet. Exercise follows this rather than preceding it.

Optionals–

If tolerable, include these types of foods–

  1. Avocado
  2. Coconut Oil- dissolved over hot food or in hot beverages, 10 minutes ahead of eating pureed or fully cooked vegetables
  3. Fully cooked vegetables, peeled if necessary
  4. White rice with diarrhea, brown rice with constipation
  5. Optional supplements;  vitamin C with baking soda, B supplements, probiotics, digestive enzymes– any in powder form or pull apart capsules is usually best. Fish oil in liquid form.
  6. Applesauce- without peels, best homemade
  7. Banana
  8. Miso soup– with or without seaweed
  9. Organic 8 Greens in even the smallest dose of 1/4 teaspoon to as much as 1 teaspoon depending upon tolerance
  10. Turmeric in food preparation
  11. Ginger Root tea water, except with bowel bleeding- then avoid
  12. Herb formula particular to your issues for remedy  (anti-inflammatories, antibiotic, gastrointestinal, etc) or use a Medicinal Herbal Tea Blend
  13. Medicinal Herbal Tea– Prepare as a tea concentrate using Post 11 and drink 1-3 cups per day spread out
  14. Adaptogen tonic herbs for strengthening  (herbs like ashwaganda, ginseng, astragalus, cat’s claw, etc)
  15. Coconut Milk (canned with higher calories in a smoothie for weight)
  16. Flax Seed Oil 1 tablespoon per day when eating pureed food
  17. If nut milks bother your stomach, use coconut milk unsweetened or flax seed, or rice milk
  18. Greek yogurt, best to make your own which has the highest probiotics possible. Avoid this if you are casein intolerant. See Post 3
  19. If you are able, and have intestinal issues, a Castor Oil Pack can be helpful in many cases.  See Post 1

How to Mix a Powdered Protein–

Take your dose and dissolve it in a cup with some cold broth.  Mix to dissolve any lumps, into a runny paste.  Now add in hot broth to equal a serving size and mix together.  This is a perfect blend for setting the gut. Do not add oil, including flax seed, fish oil, or coconut oil.  Just broth and protein. The oils, IF TOLERABLE, are taken with the pureed vegetables.

Note–

*Liquid Proteins are hard to find and ideal is not available; especially without some undesirable ingredient. Be sure most importantly, avoid aspartame or any artificial sweeteners.  We offer the liquid protein by Twin Labs called LPP Concentrated Protein liquid 16 oz. bottle. This has both natural and artificial flavor. We have found powders you can use but for our purpose, this protein is our current choice until something better comes along.  1 tablespoon of this concentrate = 15 grams which is 1 dose. It is very bioavailable and well tolerated.  Mixed into the broth it yields excellent results.  LPP Concentrated Protein is mixed into the broth 1-3 times per day. The most ideal amount for a bowel flare is 2 tablespoons, one in the AM and the other in the PM. If using 1 tablespoon per day, you will need 1 bottle in a 30 day period, or 2 bottles when using it twice daily.  16 oz. will supply approximately 1 tablespoon per day for a 30 day period. This includes the same math if using Flax Seed Oil.  If using Flax Seed Oil, keep it refrigerated and shake before use. Flax Seed Oil must be organic, cold expressed, and high lignan to be effective for our needs here.
