Making Poppy Seed Tea
For the bulk poppy seeds, 5-6 oz. of water and 1/3 of one-ounce of fresh squeezed lemon juice added to 3 oz. of whole poppy seed.  You can use as little as 1 oz. and adjust the recipe. If preparing tea using the full 3 oz. be aware that you can store your finished product in the refrigerator for later use for 3 days. To make poppy seed tea bags for a single serving, use 1 oz. of water and 2 oz. of lemon juice to prepare 2 tea-bags (6 grams). If grinding up the poppy seeds using a coffee grinder, you will need a measurement of approximately, 3.25 oz. of water and 7 oz. of lemon juice combined with 35 grams of poppy seed powder which is about 1.25 oz.  The secret to making the tea is always bear in mind that it is the ACID that is extracting the desired compounds and not the water. Soaking the seed for a minimum of 30 minutes is required. Soaking overnight, covered, on your kitchen counter, is more ideal for extracting the most benefits from the plant.
How long should I soak poppy seeds?
minimum of 30 minutes, overnight is recommended;  Water should be hot to mix the seeds to help soften the shell of the seed for better extraction.
Cooking poppy seeds for tea
Cook in water by simmering, not boiling, for about 20-30 minutes. Grinding the seed will help to extract more from the plant. Some recommend cooking in milk but I find this odd because when adding lemon juice it would curdle so I just recommend water or an herb tea of choice. You can use an herb tea instead of plain water if you prefer. I would recommend however using herbs that suit your purpose such as;  for pain– herbs that help to add more pain-relieving benefits would include;

  • Jamaican dogwood
  • wild lettuce leaf

How long should I soak poppy seeds?
See the above instruction. Poppy seeds have a hard shell so either you need more soaking time, enough acid like lemon juice, or grind them to open the seed to extraction more efficiently.
How long does poppy seed tea take to work?
 The effects of poppy tea will usually be felt within thirty minutes of drinking it. Depending on its potency, the effects can last as long as six to eight hours.  Results from consuming this tea include the desired benefits of resulting in a feeling of warmth and lightness. It can cause drowsiness. Other results include mild euphoria, and pain relief. Combining your poppy seed extraction with other complimentary plants will enhance your overall benefits. See this list above and feel free to choose one or more of these to combine with your finished product. You can add the poppy seed water extract as a “shot” to a cup of tea made from these herbs as well. Using herbs for benefits such as described, not nutrition, require an empty stomach. An empty stomach in natural medicine applications is best described as either 2 hours after eating or 1-2 hours before eating. Anytime you have an empty stomach works best. Food will distract away from the benefits of the compounds and reduce the effectiveness by as much as 70% so follow the directions for best results and making sure you always get your money’s worth from your work to make products at home.
About Poppy Seed Tea– concerns, uses, and precautions– Remember, just because it is natural doesn’t mean it cannot be abused. Like with anything, moderation and responsible usage is key and recommended for both yourself and your natural community, all who enjoy the right to make medicine at home
These processes mentioned in the above material is called a “PoppySeed Wash. Preparation is explained in order to make a medicinal tea made from poppy seeds, lemon, and water. Poppy seed is mostly sought out for its use in regards to pain relief. Some have used it to ease withdrawal from opiates but it can also be helpful for reducing anxiety, insomnia, and as an alternative to destructive opioid drugs including pain pills. Just because pain pills come from a doctor doesn’t mean they cannot be harmful, addictive, and destructive. Poppy seeds are considered an alternative to opioid medication. Most seeds commercially are washed to remove the opioid compounds from the seed surface, however, the more blue seeds do contain these compounds and can be extracted for their medicinal uses. Remember however, poppy seeds in mostly any amount and any kind- “washed or unwashed” can cause you to fail a drug test if you are taking UA’s. This does include innocent menu items such as poppy seed muffins and bagels, or teas that contain the poppy leaf itself. Abusing poppy seed tea extractions would defeat the whole purpose of creating a safer alternative to opioid medication, so proceed responsibly for the sake of yourself, those around you, and to help protect the rights of all who enjoy the ability to make an effective home-treatment for pain and other discomforts.
