Chaparral (Larrea tridentata) — Bulk 1 Pound–Certified Organic–Cut– A plant which collects minerals through it’s deep roots as deep as 25 feet. It is high in zinc. Used in excess causes liver damage. These reports of liver damage occurred in persons who consumed large dosing of powder and capsules. Chaparral has been found to be toxic to the liver in some persons when taken in the crude leaf form at doses of 1.5 to 3.5 grams per day. Traditionally it has been used in many external ointments and salves for it’s healing effects and ability to reduce pain for arthritic joints. Chaparral is an anti-inflammatory with analgesic effects. It is also very good in baths for arthritis, eczema, and psoriasis. Salves made from chaparral are excellent for eczema, psoriasis, and other skin irritations, especially when combined with myrrh, frankincense, and pine tar. As an antiseptic this herb is excellent for dressing bruises, cuts, sores.
Because chaparral in excess will cause liver damage, if using it internally, it is recommended to be consumed only in a tea form which is prepared as an extract/tincture in hot water. The taste of chaparral is so “unappealing” that by consuming it as a tea, the risk of using too much is basically eliminated. Chaparral is poorly extracted in water so in order to capture the active alkaloids in the leaf it is recommended that it either be prepared as a decoction or with alcohol as a tincture preparation. Using the tincture added to salves and ointments is more potent and more effective than when it is infused in oil or extracted with water. Old traditions used chaparral in lotion as an overall skin treatment for skin cancer as well as in salves.
